Lafayette Fellowship: France Master's, Due Dec 1

By The Editorial TeamUpdated October 22, 20265 min read

Most fully funded master's routes to Europe close in the fall, and this one closes in 40 days. The Lafayette Fellowship supports up to 30 American students for one year of master's-level study in France, with full funding and a leadership program attached, and applications close on December 1, 2026 at 11:59 a.m. Eastern, according to the Lafayette Fellowship applicant guidelines from Villa Albertine. It is newer and less picked-over than the famous names, the eligibility window is narrow enough to reward people who check it early, and it has one structural trap, a separate university admission application, that this plan is built around.

Timeline of the Lafayette Fellowship 2027-2028 cohort The 2027-2028 Lafayette timeline: applications opened September 4, close December 1, interviews run January 18-29, 2027, and fellows depart in July 2027. Source: Lafayette Fellowship / Villa Albertine and the Albertine Foundation, 2026.

First, the eligibility gate, checked in two minutes

Run this list before you write a word. Per the Berkeley OURS summary of the Lafayette Fellowship, applicants for the 2027-2028 cohort must be under the age of 27 as of July 1, 2027, hold a bachelor's degree from a US institution no later than June 30, 2027 and within two years of graduation at the time of application, and carry a GPA of no less than 3.7. Knowledge of French is not required for acceptance. If you clear those four lines, you are in the pool the fellowship was built for; if you miss the graduation window or the GPA line, this is a hard gate, not a holistic-review suggestion, and your December is better spent on a deadline like the Horowitz Foundation grants, which share the December 1 date but gate on dissertation progress instead.

What the fellowship actually pays

The Albertine Foundation's Lafayette Fellowship page lists the package: a 1,500 euro monthly stipend to cover living expenses, one year of tuition at a partner French institution for eligible programs, application fee waivers for French institutions, a student visa fee waiver for one academic year, a round-trip flight to and from France, and coverage of travel and activities for the French-American Leadership Program. Do the stipend math before you fall in love with a city: 1,500 euros a month is comfortable in many French university cities and tight in Paris, which is a real input into which partner program you choose, not an afterthought. The partner network has expanded to 21 institutions for this cohort, across STEM, the humanities, the social sciences, and the arts.

The trap: two applications, one program, one institution

Here is the part that ends applications. In parallel with the fellowship application, you must separately complete the admission process for your chosen French partner institution through that university's own platform, and you may apply to only one program at only one partner institution. The award is conditional on admission, and laureates must submit an official letter of admission or acceptance. So the sequence matters more than the prose. Pick the institution first, this week, from the partner list; confirm its own admission deadline and requirements, which are separate from December 1; then write the fellowship materials to that specific program. Students who treat the fellowship form as the whole application discover the second application in late November, which is the same failure mode I flag in every deadline plan, from the Newcombe Fellowship onward: the visible deadline is rarely the only deadline.

Your 40-day workback

WhenTask
By October 29Choose the one partner institution and program; record its separate admission deadline
By November 5Request three letters: two academic, one extracurricular (Berkeley's summary); the guidelines allow three to four letters total
By November 12Draft the cover letter and record a first take of the video personal statement
By November 19Submit the French institution's admission application if its deadline is earlier than December 1
By November 25Final video take, transcripts from all colleges attended, and a resume of no more than two pages assembled
December 1, 11:59 a.m. ETFellowship deadline. Note the time: midday, not midnight

Selected candidates interview online between January 18 and 29, 2027, results are announced by the end of March 2027, and fellows depart in July 2027 for a September study start. There is no application fee. The midday deadline deserves one more underline, because it is the kind of detail that also catches people on the Gates Cambridge timeline: read the hour, not just the date.

FAQ

Do I need to speak French to apply? No. The fellowship is open to Francophone and non-Francophone candidates, and some partner programs are taught entirely in English. A program taught in French will expect French language certificates, so match your language to the program, not the fellowship.

Can I apply to more than one French university to keep my options open? No. For the fellowship, you apply for admission to only one program at only one partner institution, and the award is conditional on admission there. Choose deliberately and early.

How much is the stipend worth over the year? The foundation lists 1,500 euros per month for living expenses, alongside one year of tuition, a round-trip flight, and fee waivers. The stipend period in the foundation's listing runs from mid-July through the end of June, so budget it as roughly a full year of monthly support, with Paris costing noticeably more than other university cities.

I graduated three years ago. Am I eligible? Under the published rules, no: applicants must be within two years of their bachelor's graduation at the time of application, under 27 as of July 1, 2027, and at a 3.7 GPA or above. Those gates are the first thing to check, before any writing.
